Merquel Priory was founded by the monks of Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys in the seventh century.
The oldest text which mentions Mesquer for the first time in 1182 is an inventory of property of the Templars which indicates the water mills in Mesquer. The first inhabitants of Mesquer built their first parish, the chapel of Saint-Mars, near the convent. There was once a cemetary used by monks and Mesqui between the Benedictine church and parish building.
